Fire at Muenster Hotel contained to patio, GoFundMe page created to assist in repairs

The hotel in the village of Muenster, east of Humboldt needs exterior repairs after a fire on the patio on Sunday morning.

The daughter of the hotel owners, Brianne Langlois is hoping the community will support a GoFundMe page to help with the costs associated with the fire.

“Damages were estimated at around $10,000, so the issue is with small town hotels, you can’t get insurance anymore,” Langlois said. “My parents have been looking for someone to get insurance through but can’t find anybody.”

According to Langlois, insurance underwriters have said older buildings, even those designated as heritage properties are too risky to insure when they operate as licensed establishments.

Langlois told northeasttNOW Claude Britz who is a Muenster resident called Muenster Fire Department who responded quickly and contained the blaze. The Langlois’ were informed by the fire department that the fire was started by improper disposal of a cigarette butt.

“My parents do have butt containers on the deck but someone just chose to put it into a planter and it smoldered overnight and the fire started the next morning,” Langlois said. “The plant that was left in the planter was dry and brittle and went up in flames.”

The goal for the GoFundMe page is $8,000.

“We don’t have to fully rebuild the whole deck but do have to replace parts of it and a new exterior door on the hotel and that door is $800 alone,” Langlois said.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze according to Langlois who’s parents live in the upstairs of the hotel.

“We are very thankful that things aren’t as bad as they could have been but it is still a hard hit with these times,” Langlois said.

Brian and Dianne Langlois have owned and operated the Muenster bar and hotel for the past three and a half years.
