‘One team, one province’: Goudy wins big in Melfort constituency

Oct 26, 2020 | 11:11 PM

The Melfort constituency remains under Saskatchewan Party control after the Oct. 26 general election.

Incumbent Todd Goudy received over 75 per cent of the votes in the riding, with less than 500 mail-in ballots still to be counted.

It’s Goudy’s first general election as he was first elected in a byelection in 2018 to replace the late Kevin Phillips.

“Everyone loved Kevin,” he said. “My hope was that he would be around here.”

Yet for Goudy, he noted this election gave him a chance to stand alone as a candidate, rather than be elected on someone else’s behalf.

“This seems like the first time that I’ll be elected to serve in my place,” he said.

Goudy said the wide margin of victory shows confidence in him as a candidate, but also in the party’s platform and how it serves the riding.

“So long as we keep that as our attitude,” he said. “That we listen to the people and serve the people for their benefit; I think we’ll do a good job.”

As polls filtered in at Goudy’s campaign office in Melfort, the workers there were quite optimistic about the results, but even with the almost landslide victory, Goudy said there’s always room for a bit of doubt to creep in.

“I woke up at 3:30 in the morning probably two weeks ago, sweating, panicked, it was funny,” he said with a laugh. “You never know.”

Goudy added he’s happy he got through the evening still holding the MLA seat in Melfort.

With the Sask. Party forming a majority government, Goudy gave props to Premier Scott Moe. He noted the election success shows the confidence voters in Saskatchewan have in the Sask. Party to navigate and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have a lot of good industry that’s really helping the economy, the ag sector is strong,” Goudy said. “I think this is a great part of the world to be from and we’re going to be a big contributor to Saskatchewan’s recovery.”

Goudy added he knows there are issues to be addressed, and it’s something he recognized going door-to-door, and no matter who people voted for, he’s ready to serve the whole area.

“That’s what I really hope at the end of the day. Everybody knows we’re one team, we’re one province, we’re one people that need to look after each other and serve one another the best that we can,” he said. “And if you want to be a leader, in my mind, you have to be the servant of everyone.”

The newly re-elected MLA also had some things to say about a few of his opponents saying the NDP’s Lorne Schroeder is a down to earth person, and Goudy appreciates the advice he’s been given. He added the Buffalo Party is there for a reason, and they’ll take into account the messages they hear from them.
