Mustangs, Hawks set to meet 10 times in 2020/2021 SJHL season

Oct 27, 2020 | 5:00 PM

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) announced its tentative schedule for the 2020/2021 season on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Currently, the league has approval to begin play with 150 people in the stands, but would like more for a regular season to begin, something they’re still waiting on approval for from Sask. Health.

Things are expected to get underway on Nov. 6 for the league, including the Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks. It’ll be a 50 game schedule for the SJHL.

The Rivalry

While the Mustangs and Hawks will see each other two more times before the calendar turns to November, the rivals won’t wait long to see each other once again. The Mustangs and Hawks will meet for the first of 10 meetings in a home and home set on Nov. 13 and 14, starting at Centennial Arena in Nipawin.

They’ll do another home and home battle on Dec. 18 and 19 before the Christmas break, but they’ll face-off again on New Years Day and Jan. 2 to kick off the 2021 portion of the schedule.

March 19 and 20 will be the second to last home and home set for the Hawks and Mustangs before they close out the season with a weekend set on April 2 and 3 if things go according to plan.

Melfort Mustangs

The remaining 40 games will have the Mustangs battling the Flin Flon Bombers and La Ronge Ice Wolves eight times, the Battlefords North Stars and Kindersley Klippers six times, and the remainder of the league twice.

Things will kick off for the Mustangs on Nov. 6 against the Flin Flon Bombers at the Northern Lights Palace, followed by another matchup in Flin Flon on Nov. 7.

Melfort will play 16 games before Christmas.

Nipawin Hawks

The Nipawin Hawks’ remaining 40 games will have the same structure as the Mustangs as they’ll see the Bombers and Ice Wolves eight times, Battlefords and Kindersley six times, and the rest of the league twice each.

La Ronge will be Nipawin’s first test of the season as they’ll make the trip to the Mel Hegland Uniplex for game one of a home and home with the teams meeting again on Saturday, Nov. 7 in Nipawin.

The Hawks will also get 16 game in prior to Christmas.

The schedule is subject to approval from Sask. Health and could change throughout the year with the COVID-19 pandemic still at the forefront.
