The Carrot River Outback Thunder have made a splash ahead of the start to the regular season.

The Thunder have added Jayden Wiens on loan from the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Saskatoon Blades as part of the leagues loan agreement with Junior hockey leagues.

Wiens, a 2003-born forward and Carrot River, Sask. native spent the 2019/2020 season with the Blades, playing in 63 games, and scoring seven goals and adding six assists for 13 points.

Thunder General Manager Brennan Hall told northeastNOW that Wiens has already been skating with the team, and gets along well with the group already being from the area.

“Jayden is going to bring lots of speed and skill to our squad,” Hall said. “He’s going to provide us with great depth down the middle and is able to play on the wing as well.”

Hall added Wiens is a great leader and will help add to the roster they already have.

Wiens previously played his 15-year-old season with the Tisdale Trojans in 2018/2019 and helped the team to a bronze medal at the Telus Cup, and a win at the Telus Cup Western Regionals hosted in Tisdale. He had 34 points in 44 games that regular season, and exploded during the post-season, tallying nine points in seven playoff games, four points in four games at the regional tournament, and eight points in seven games at the Telus Cup.

Wiens also joins his brother David who is going into his second season with the Thunder.

The WHL season is projected to begin on Jan. 8 with the loan agreement concluding on Dec. 20.

The Thunder begin their regular season on Friday, Nov. 6 as they visit the Prince Albert Titans, before the home opener in Carrot River on Saturday, Nov. 7 between the same clubs.
