Cooperative Place in Wynyard recognized with provincial award in first year of operation

Nov 6, 2020 | 4:03 PM

Despite the challenges around the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Co-operative Place in Wynyard are calling the first year a success.

The multi-sport recreation facility is home to the community rink as well as the golf course clubhouse. The ribbon was cut on the $11.4 million building last October.

The town was recently on the receiving end of the Cecil Nobes Facility Award of Excellence from the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) for the facility.

“For us, it was improving our functionality of our facility and our energy efficiency,” Director of Leisure Services Sigourney Anderson said. “Which we demonstrated by saying we used to have a golf club and arena as two separate buildings and now we have this one combined building.”

The energy efficiency of the building includes LED lighting and recapturing energy and heat that comes off the ice plant.

The award was presented to the town on behalf of the association by members who visited the community and also filmed a promotional video for the facility.

“They are going to use the video to promote the award itself while the community of Wynyard gets to use the video to promote our facility,” Anderson said.

The golf course clubhouse did exceptionally well this year with more golfers taking to the green around home with travel being down for most people across the province over the golf season.

“We have heard nothing but good things from our golfers this year,” Anderson said. “We took advantage of the fact that moving into this new building and having the different restrictions, it made the course and club seem like a more professional course.”

Some of the changes are things that Anderson said they may hang onto post-COVID. Anderson pointed to the new addition of a marshall on the course 10 minutes between tee-times made things run smoothly.

The club was able to go ahead with its annual Wynyard Monarchs Senior Hockey Team fundraising tournament.

Funds from the course’s Chase the Ace fundraiser have not been earmarked just yet but Anderson said a second storey deck that would overlook hole one and the green of hole nine is a possibility.
