Hawks open season with road win over Ice Wolves

The Nipawin Hawks opened the 2020-21 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season Friday with a 7-3 victory in La Ronge over the Ice Wolves.

In the team’s first game since March 11, Nipawin scored four times in the first period and saw themselves with a 6-1 lead heading into the final frame. The Ice Wolves would close the gap to 6-3 late in the third but 18-year-old rookie Carter Stebbings scored an empty-net goal with just under two minutes to play the seal the win.

Burke Simpson led the way offensively for the Hawks scoring three times including two in the opening period. Josh Lester opened the scoring for Nipawin with a power-play marker. Zach Falck scored his first SJHL goal halfway through the first period before Simpson netted his pair late in the period, both also with the man advantage.

Brody Wilson recorded his first SJHL tally in the win as well. Michael Makarenko chipped in with three assists. The Hawks finished 4 for 9 on the power-play.

Holden Knights, Nolan Allan, and Kaiden Collumb provided the Ice Wolves scoring.

Ross Hawryluk made 37 stops in the victory for Nipawin. Liam McGarva started the contest but was relieved by Xavier Cannon after allowing four goals in the first period. Cannon made 16 stops in relief.

The teams will complete the back end of their home-and-home series Saturday at Centennial Arena in Nipawin. Faceoff is 7:30 p.m. The maximum capacity ticket sales sold out earlier this week.
