Behiel elected as mayor of Humboldt

Nov 9, 2020 | 11:20 PM

Micheal Behiel has been elected as the mayor of Humboldt.

Behiel served one term on council and is excited to take that experience into his new role with the city.

“I’m very happy to see that the people believed in what I was hoping to put forth and what I plan to do for the next four years and felt confident to put their trust in me,” Behiel said. “Someone had to take the lead and I am very happy that it got to be me.”

Behiel had 760 votes, councillor Lorne Pratchler had 549, while Harley Bentley who also ran in 2016 had 130 votes.

“I had some really good competition this time and I really wasn’t quite sure where it was going to end up,” Behiel said. “I am quite pleased that the results echoed my hopes.”

Being part of council for the past four years Behiel is very proud of the corrections made to the budget and the city’s bottom line.

“My goal is to continue with infrastructure replacement and repair, expand capital purchases as necessary and hopefully start to return some of the things back to citizens that we have done without while we made these corrections,” Behiel said.

As for the new council in Humboldt, Behiel looks forward to beginning work with the team.

“The key is that we move forward as a team and a partnership as a whole,” Behiel said. “I don’t consider myself the overall leader. I consider myself part of the team but (one that) takes the tough decisions and makes a call and takes the bad heat for it if necessary.”

There were 14 names on the ballot hoping for seats on Humboldt city council with a split of seven men and seven women.

Unofficially, Rob Muench, Kelly Herperger, Larry Jorgenson, Roger Nordick, Roger Korte and Amanda Klitch were elected to council.

Muench had the most votes at 1,152, followed by Herperger at 835, Jorgenson 782, Nordick had 748, Korte had 641, while Klitch had 633.

Defeated candidates were Dave Rowe with 631 votes, Darcy Leonew had 495 votes, Megan Macinnis had 487 votes, Michaela Fetter with 352 votes, Carrie Ann Schemenauer-Hradecki had 302 votes, Tawnie Johnson had 201 votes, Caitlin Senko had 186 votes, and Phillip Hinz had 173 votes.

Official results will be announced tomorrow afternoon.
