Municipal Election 2020

Election day to go as planned in the northeast

Nov 9, 2020 | 2:25 PM

There may be lots of snow outside, but local municipalities are continuing with their elections today.

Polls will remain open for Melfort, Humboldt, Nipawin, and Tisdale until 8 p.m.

Earlier today, the province announced they would give authorization to each municipality and school division appointed returning officer to postpone elections due to the hazardous conditions on Saskatchewan roads.

The release stated, “if in the opinion of a returning officer appointed under the Act, the weather conditions on November 9, 2020, impede the ability for voters to attend the poll(s) in order to vote, including in situations where voting day polls have already opened, the returning officer may postpone the general election of the municipality, school division or ward, as the case may be, scheduled to take place on November 9, 2020 to a date on or before November 25, 2020.”

The Government of Saskatchewan introduced the measures in order to ensure safety of citizens.

The ministry issued a reminder for driver to stay safe on the roads by slowing to 60 km/h when highway equipment or emergency vehicles are stopped with warning lights on, staying back from snowplows and the ‘snow zone,’ driving according to weather and road conditions, passing when safe to do, and using the highway hotline.

Returning officers for the municipal election have ensured snow around polling stations has been cleared.

Ballots will be cast at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort, The Evergreen Centre in Nipawin, Tisdale Civic Centre, and Uniplex Curling Rink in Humboldt.

The Rural Municipality of Connaught has also informed northeastNOW they will continue with their election as planned. Polling stations for the day include the Zenon Pakr Community Hall, Ridgedale Centennial Hall, and the Connaught Municipal Office in Tisdale (use west entrance).

Northeast School Division board election polls are open until 8 p.m. as well. There are polling stations at the Arborfield Community Centre, Carrot River Community Hall, Connaught Municipal Office, and the Zennon Park Community Hall.
