Wiebe plays last-minute hero in Hawks win

For the second straight night, the Nipawin Hawks scored in the final minute of regulation to edge the Melfort Mustangs.

Brodie Girod scored with exactly a minute left securing a 2-1 Hawks’ victory on Friday night.

Then on Saturday, Jaxsen Wiebe wired his first of the season with 33 seconds left lifting Nipawin to a 3-2 triumph in Melfort. The 18-year-old Moose Jaw product said the late-game break down the right wing allowed him to fire home his first Saskatchewan Hockey League (SJHL) goal since March 22, 2019.

“I seen net right when I stepped over the blueline and I knew the pass was going to be forced,” Wiebe explained to northeastNOW. “I came in and I had my spot picked. I ripped it and luckily it went in.”

The Hawks couldn’t beat Steven Bacovsky through the first 50 minutes of the game but a powerplay goal by Girod cut the lead to 2-1. Jérémy Rainville tied the contest with just over seven minutes to play. Wiebe said after Ben Tkachuk made the score 2-0 Melfort, the Hawks didn’t panic.

“You know what, we kept with it. The boys got up, we rallied, we stayed positive. It goes to show what happens when you keep working, you stick with it and chip away. Good things happen,” he said.

Ross Hawryluk started his third straight game in net for Nipawin making 34 stops. Bacovsky suffered the loss allowing three goals on 35 Hawk shots.

Colton Schell scored the Mustang’s other goal.

The Hawks will look to keep their perfect start intact on Tuesday when they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves in a makeup date from the postponement on Nov. 7. There are still tickets available. Purchasers are asked to visit the Hawks’ office or call 306-862-2748 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday.

Face-off is 7:30 p.m.
