Mayor George and council officially sworn into office in Melfort

The City of Melfort held its Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Nov. 16 and it was the inaugural meeting with the newly elected council.

Mayor Glenn George said the feeling of being mayor has finally sunk in after he defeated incumbent Rick Lang by a total of five votes. He said it’s also been a steep learning curve.

“I guess you could say, if you win by one or you win by 100, you still won,” George said. “So, yeah I’m happy.”

George said he’s tried to be involved as much as possible on council while he was in the chambers for eight years prior to becoming mayor.

George, as well as his fellow newly elected councillors all read their oaths and were all officially sworn in. George called it a great group of people for Melfort.

“I couldn’t have hand picked a better crew,” he said. “But, having said that, there was a lot of good candidates, so there were some good candidates that didn’t get elected too. That’s good and bad, I think it’s good that there was enough quality citizens in Melfort to put their name forward.”

Tara Muntain is the only newly elected councillor, while Brian Enge returns after serving from 2012 to 2016. Trent Mitchell, April Phillips, Doug Terry, and Tim Hoenmans all return to their seats.

The councillors also approved what standing committees they would be a part of as well. Mitchell and Hoenmans will be on the legislative and finance committee, Muntain and Terry will be on the protective services committee and the works and utilities committee, and Enge and Phillips will be on the community services committee. Each councillor will also serve a portion of time as deputy mayor over the four year term.

Next up for George and council will be preparing for what is going to be a tough budgeting process, according to George.

“We’re all in this together, we have to do what we have to do,” he said. “So let’s just suck it up, and do what’s right for Melfort, period.”

A capital budget meeting is expected in a couple of weeks. The operating budget will pick up in the new year according to George.
