Humboldt preparing for community Christmas tree lighting

Dec 2, 2020 | 3:38 PM

The City of Humboldt will be getting into the Christmas spirit on Thursday night with the community tree lighting.

The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Civic Park and will also be streamed on Facebook Live.

Communications Manager Penny Lee said even in the bitter cold last year, there were around 200 people who attended.

“It really is unfortunate that we can’t have everyone there again this year in that capacity,” Lee said. “We are hoping that people will come and park their vehicles and partake in that perspective.”

Benches will also be placed in front of the tree for photo opportunities for families and those that are within their bubble.

The Christmas tree lighting is a tradition that fell to wayside about 17 years ago but was resurrected last year at the suggestion of former mayor Rob Muench.

The plan is to keep the tradition alive and add on to the event itself each year to make it more spectacular.

“This year, that would be the addition of the 26-foot artificial tree,” Lee said. “We just want to add to make it more enjoyable for the community.”

The other addition to the event is having it live streamed as many other things have been throughout the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Michael Behiel and councillor Muench will flick the switch at the event and organizers hope Santa Claus will make an appearance as well.

Mayor Behiel placed the star on the top of the tree two days ago as the final touch to the tree next to city hall.

“We hope to see a lot of people come and just admire the tree itself and its beauty,” Lee said.

The full video from the event will then be posted to the City of Humboldt website beginning on Friday as well for future viewing.
