Tisdale not confirmed for hosting curling provincials in 2022 following COVID-19 cancellation

While Saskatchewan has its male and female representatives for the national curling championships, the fate of its provincial championships beyond 2021 is up in the air.

CURLSASK announced on Thursday, Jan. 14 the senior provincial curling championships – men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles – were cancelled after the Government of Saskatchewan declined its proposed “bubble” format.

The “CURLSASK Five” provincials were originally set to take place in Tisdale in February 2021. However, in October 2020, the provincials were re-located to Aberdeen.

“[Tisdale] simply couldn’t host the championship with all the COVID-19 concerns, so it was moved to Aberdeen,” CURLSASK Executive Director Ashley Howard said. “Unfortunately, with the current COVID situation, we’ve had to cancel the championship in Aberdeen as well.”

When asked if Tisdale would get the first chance to host provincials in a year when it’s safe to do so, Howard said CURLSASK would want to be back in the town. Although 2022 is described as a “scheduling nightmare.”

“With the changes needed to accommodate SaskGames and the Olympics on top of large financial losses this year, it’s all very uncertain right now,” Howard said. “Also, COVID is still very much unpredictable… we’ll work with the host committee to award a major event again when they can do it right and bring the whole community together.”
