First Use Of Melfort Heliport

STARS Air Ambulance makes first stop at Melfort heliport

Jan 25, 2021 | 4:39 PM

Melfort’s heliport got its first usage on Sunday, Jan. 24 for what STARS Air Ambulance is calling an “inter-facility transfer”.

The location was officially approved in December.

City of Melfort Director of Development and Community Planning Brent Lutz said it’s a nice thing to have in the community, but something that hopefully isn’t used very often.

“It’s exciting to see the helicopter land, but it also meant that someone was in need of that emergency transfer,” Lutz said. “And I guess we’re just pleased that we’re going to be able to offer that in the community.”

Lutz also lives very close to the heliport and said they heard stories of windows rattling, and lots of noise when the helicopter gets close, but any concerns were put to rest on Sunday.

“None of that occurred,” he said. “If you’re a heavy sleeper, I would say you would’ve slept through the whole event and maybe not even known it had happened.”

It was just as the helicopter landed that Lutz noticed what was happening. He added the City did what they could to make sure that the noise and disruption would not be there for residents of that area.

Lutz also mentioned they hope this service helped the individual get the care they needed much faster, and hopefully save a life.
