Melfort Food Bank offering delivery due to uncertain weather

Feb 9, 2021 | 1:00 PM

In an effort to ensure needs are being met, the Melfort Food Bank is offering contact-less delivery.

With the uncertain and very cold weather, oftentimes those who are in need of food hampers can’t physically make it into the Food Bank for supplies.

Secretary Ellen Zuck told northeastNOW with the generosity of the community over the last while, they are also able to increase the size of the hampers.

“We have been getting more food in so we can increase them a bit so I think we will keep going like that with the need,” Zuck said. “We are hoping that once the weather smartens up a little more people will be able to get out.”

The current size of the hampers that go out every two weeks can last between two and three days.

January and February are typically a bit slower because of the colder weather so the delivery service was something the Food Bank board decided was a bit more essential.

“A lot of our clients walk so it makes it difficult when its icy or cold and they have to sometimes walk a fair distance to get there,” Zuck said. “We thought with a delivery service we can maybe help fill the need a bit more.”

The delivery service will continue as long as there is a need but those wishing to receive a hamper by delivery will need to register ahead of time. Preference for delivery will be given to those with mobility and serious health issues.

Registration takes place on Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for hampers that will go out on Thursday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Food Bank will also still be open this Thursday as usual and then open again in two weeks.

“We are seeing new people every time we open the doors, so I am thinking they are maybe people that are out of work or they simply are just needing a boost ahead of pay day as well,” Zuck said.

New clients to the Food Bank will need to register prior to being eligible for delivery.
