Lack of respect being shown for restrictions at Sask. restaurants

Feb 12, 2021 | 4:00 PM

Sitting as a party of four in a restaurant in Saskatchewan has been the guideline for quite some time now.

But some customers are still resisting.

Executive director of the Humboldt Chamber of Commerce Brent Fitzpatrick has heard from different retailers and those in the food industry that customers are pushing back when there is no need for it.

Instances of patrons using abusive language toward servers in restaurants from in the Humboldt region and beyond has reached Fitzpatrick.

“These people are very much on the front line and they are hearing it all. I can’t imagine the stress that they are under,” Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick wanted to remind anyone going out to eat at a local establishment of the luxury that is fortunately still available to them. Respect toward servers and staff of restaurants, especially when they are adhering to guidelines laid out by elected officials and the health authority, is essential.

“They are just doing what they are being asked to do,” Fitzpatrick said. “They are not the people making the restrictions. They are the people on the front lines asking you to be respectful and obey restrictions.”

While smaller local businesses are appreciative of all the support they have received during the COVID-19 pandemic, Fitzpatrick said there still needs to be some level of respect to go along with it.

“These are business people that have given support to different community organizations in the past because they are community minded people. This is when we need to help them out,” Fitzpatrick said.

That support comes in the form of business as well as following the restrictions that are in place at each individual establishment or retailer.

“The Province of Saskatchewan is steadily knocking down the Covid numbers,” Fitzpatrick said in a release. “That goal has been accomplished with a community focus on attacking the virus.”

Fitzpatrick reiterated a previous message he shared in the summer when retailers were able to re-open.

“If all people have to do is respect the rules, respect the staff and wear a mask, that seems pretty easy,” he said.
