City of Melfort encouraging residents to be active during Go Out & Play Challenge

The City of Melfort is encouraging residents to be active by taking part in the 2021 Saskatchewan Blue Cross Go Out & Play Challenge.

The community in the province that logs the most minutes of physical activity on the challenge’s website will receive $10,000 for a project that gets families moving.

Recreation programmer Shannon Marshall said Melfort would use the prize money to purchase inflatable products such as bouncy castles and sumo suits for events.

“We could use them on Canada Day or other outdoor celebrations,” Marshall said. “We could have family fun days at the park. It’s a really unique way to get active outside. We decided to try something a little bit different.”

The 10th annual challenge kicks off Monday and will finish on March 10.

“It’s focused on just getting people active,” Marshall said. “Being active is so good for your mental and physical well-being. That’s the main goal of this initiative. It’s more important now because we are not as active as we once were.”

This is the fifth year the city has registered for the competition.

“There are still lots of things people can do,” Marshall said. “We have great walking trails, outdoor rinks, and tobogganing hills. Disc golf is even a really big thing in the winter.”

The community’s progress will be updated at the Kerry Vickar Centre and on the City of Melfort’s Facebook page.

The Town of Assiniboia won last year’s competition after compiling 435,696 minutes.
