‘It will be a safe season’: Online registration open for 2021 Melfort Minor Football season

Mar 15, 2021 | 12:30 PM

Registration is now open for Melfort Minor Football as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Normally, registration nights would take place city wide, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has not allowed mass gatherings.

David Rogers, head coach with the program said Melfort Minor Football is great for those in Grades 5 through 8 to learn how to play the sport safely.

“We’re not worried about winning championships or any of that sort of stuff,” he said. “It’s really just a community based introduction to football, come out and play and let’s have a good time.”

Rogers added the program tries to teach safe contact, including tackling and blocking. He said all the instructors are trained in safe contact as well.

Last season was unable to go forward due to the restrictions, but Rogers said this year should move forward and Football Saskatchewan has put forth some protocols for a return to play Melfort Minor Football will be following.

“I’m excited that I think we’ll be able to have a season,” Rogers told northeastNOW. “I think it will be a good season, and I think it will be a safe season.”

Those interested in registering for the season can go to their website and any questions can be directed to melfortminorfootball@gmail.com. In the event that a season is unable to go ahead, those registered will get reimbursed.
