MELFORT, Sask. – The new Pork Promotion-Research Agency (PPRA) held its first meeting and identified the members that will guide its first year of operations.

The members will shape the yearly business plan and the five-year strategy for the agency.

The PPRA was created to generate greater collaboration across the value chain through increased research and promotion activities.

The pork agency’s twelve members represent pork producers from across Canada, the importer community and the retail and restaurant elements of the pork value chain.

Agriculture in the Classroom Canada (AITC-C), along with its ten provincial member organizations, are part of an expansion of an e-learning platform aimed at bringing knowledge about food and agriculture to education professionals.

From April 2019 through 2020, the Business of Farming (BOF) reached 243 educational stakeholders across Ontario, the majority of which came from urban areas, where traditionally the agriculture knowledge gap is widest.

BOF will equip educators with information from across the agri-food sector to deliver in Canadian classrooms.

Through the e-learning platform, teachers will gain the knowledge to present foundational topics in agriculture and food to students, as well as learn about how the sector relates to their daily life and well-being.

Bayer Crop Science Canada provided funding for the program. The new partnership will also leverage matching funding from the Canadian Agriculture Partnership program.

As a kickoff to Canadian farm safety week the federal government announced $1.4 million over two years to the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA).

The money will go to initiatives that promote farm safety for producers, their families and workers.

Activities include awareness raising, community engagement and the development and maintenance of safety resources and tools.

CASA will continue to provide education to rural emergency responders and firefighters and provide online health and safety training courses to farm workers.
