Winter storm brings blanket of snow to the northeast

Mar 30, 2021 | 1:00 PM

Snow shovels were put to use again this morning following the winter storm that made its way through Saskatchewan yesterday.

Strong winds and snow pulled into the Melfort area early in the afternoon and continued throughout the day and overnight.

The northeast seemed to make it through the storm with minimal damage being reported and snowfall is keeping City of Melfort crews busy with clearing streets.

Area highway conditions deteriorated late afternoon and the highway hotline was reporting, ‘travel not recommended’ last night but were back to ‘winter conditions’ by this morning.

Elsewhere, there were many highways in the southwest corner of the province closed and power outages were reported as wind took down lines. SaskPower is working to make those repairs and as of Tuesday morning, there were 1600 homes still without service according spokesperson Scott McGregor.

In southern Saskatchewan, wind gusts were in the 90 km/hr range while the strongest wind gust was recorded in Swift Current at 120 km/hr according to Environment Canada.

There is a chance of more flurries today before sunshine returns tomorrow and is expected to continue into the weekend. Environment Canada has double digit temperature in the forecast for Thursday and Friday.
