Weldon care home fundraising for back-up generator

Apr 6, 2021 | 2:00 PM

The 18 resident care home in Weldon is in need of a back-up generator and fundraising efforts are underway in order to have one installed.

For the last three years, members of the board of the Weldon Country Villa have been trying to raise funds from operating revenue to pay for the project but have been unsuccessful.

Board Chair Wayne Steen said the board decided to do what they are calling a ‘keep the lights on in the Villa’ fundraiser.

“We had a person approach us and ask if we had any projects underway and he kickstarted the campaign with a $5,000 donation,” Steen said.

A few more donations have come in since the kickstart donation but the project is estimated at $50,000 upon completion.

“We are appealing to past and present supporters of the Villa and beyond to try to raise enough funds to get the project completed,” Steen said.

If a power outage would occur for more than a couple of hours in the middle of the winter, the generator would be essential to keeping residents safe and warm.

“We would have a serious problem very quickly because we need electricity for heat, water and cooking,” Steen said. “We can’t be without power long or we would be scrambling to find a place for our residents.”

Luckily, the power hasn’t been out for much longer than three hours at the Villa at one time but the generator would provide that peace of mind for everyone involved.

“Three or four years ago when that plow wind went through the Prince Albert area there were people without power for three days so we would be really scrambling if that happened here,” Steen said.

The hope is to raise the funds and get the generator installed this spring or summer.

Donations can be made by contacting the Villa at 306-887-2888 or through etransfer to wchvilla@sasktel.net. Steen can be reached at 306-961-5525 for further details.

All donations will have received a charitable tax receipt and will be recognized on a plaque in the Villa.
