Humboldt area receives funding for Early Learning Resource Centre

Apr 13, 2021 | 2:00 PM

The Humboldt area will be benefitting from the Government of Saskatchewan’s announcement of funding for Early Years Family Resource Centres in the province.

The government announced on Monday, April 12 that a total of $430,000 would be allocated for centre startups in Humboldt and Estevan with $215,000 going to each community.

Horizon School Division will be leading the project in Humboldt and director of education Kevin Garinger said it’s exciting to have this resource in their area.

“We’ve seen it in the province working very very well,” he said. “So, the fact that it’s coming to Humboldt is going to provide a tremendous level of support to lots of citizens.”

An Early Years Family Resource Centre in the area would offer drop-in and scheduled programming for families with young children between zero and five, as well as provide access to information and support for families.

The next steps of the project according to Garinger will be consulting with those in the Humboldt area; mayor and council, as well as the Ministry of Education.

“We’ll work with them,” Garinger said. “And we’ll get a deeper understanding of all the pieces that we will put in place and then we’ll begin the necessary work to get this up and operational.”

Garinger added that they hope to be operational by the fall of 2021. He said they likely won’t be doing a new build for the centre, but will consult with the stakeholders and see what is available to them.
