MN-S Election

Transparency, education, membership main keys for Miller in bid for MN-S regional representative

Apr 26, 2021 | 3:00 PM

Transparency and education are big focuses for Dennis Miller as the Metis Nation Saskatchewan (MN-S) holds elections for their legislative assembly.

Miller is running in the Eastern II region to be the regional representative in the MN-S.

Now retired, Miller has spent most of his life in Tisdale, spending about 40 years working in the automotive industry. He also ran a video rental store in the 1990’s.

He said that education is a major step and causes a trickle-down effect for opportunities down the road.

“If you’ve got education, you have access to better housing, better jobs,” Miller told northeastNOW. “Better health control over addictions, that sort of thing.”

Miller also noted that he thinks there has been a lack of transparency within the MN-S in recent years, and, if elected, he hopes to be more transparent with members.

“I just want to have that brought to the light, brought to the surface,” he said. “And make the grassroots people aware of what is available to them, and what they can accomplish by embracing their Metis heritage.”

There were some concerns around voting rules in early March 2021.

Speaking of Metis heritage, getting more people their Metis cards is very important for Miller locally. Miller said he’s spent 20 years researching his lineage and getting his Metis card.

He’s encouraging anyone who may have been putting it off, or maybe don’t know about their Metis heritage, to do their research and get registered.

“That way we have a better idea of how many people we’re talking about,” Miller said. “And we have a better idea of where the money can be spent, once we get the demographic of that in place, so that we know what kind of services the Metis Nation people require.”

He encourages anyone with questions to call the local offices.

Miller has spent about 10 years on the Kipabiskau Regional Park Board and said he’s happy with how things have developed in his time on the board.

As election day approaches, Miller said he’d like to do some in-person meets but it is difficult with COVID-19. However, Facebook will be the main medium of communication for Miller right now.

As of April 26, only Miller is listed as a candidate for Eastern II representative. The deadline for nominations is April 29 at 2 p.m. MN-S CEO Gwen Lafond said they encourage people to get their nomination packages in early.

Metis citizens can vote in their region at the Regional Returning Offices starting May 14 through 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or at advance polls in select communities on May 22 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m, before going to the polls on election day on May 29.
