Mustangs commit local product for 21/22 season

The Melfort Mustangs have committed a local boy for the 2021/2022 season.

Zac Somers, a 2004-born forward, has committed to his hometown Mustangs.

Somers spent the beginning of the 2020/2021 season with the Tisdale Trojans but did not get into any Saskatchewan U18 AAA Hockey League games due to injury prior to the COVID-19 pause.

In 2019/2020, Somers left the northeast to go to Prairie Hockey Academy in Briercrest, Sask. and play with their U16 club. That season, Somers scored nine goals and added 21 assists for 30 points, good for the team lead in points and assists. He also had three points in three playoff games.

“We’re excited to have Zac join our team.” Mustang head coach and GM Trevor Blevins said in a release. “His development over the last two years has been phenomenal. He will be a big part of our future and will step in and provide speed and skill to our team.”

Prior to the 2019 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) draft, the Mustangs auto-protected Somers as a local, making him ineligible for the draft.

Somers spent his two U15 AA seasons in the northeast as well, playing for the North East Wolfpack. He was over a point-per-game in his first season with the Wolfpack, leading the team in scoring with 22 goals, and adding 15 assists for 37 points, third-best of the team. The next season, Somers continued his scoring production with 24 goals, and adding 19 assists for 43 points. He was second on the team in goals and points, just behind fellow Mustangs prospect Connor Hvidston, who signed in December 2020. Somers also had nine points in seven playoff games over two seasons with the Wolfpack.
