Seed library providing Island gardens a jump start on summer

NANAIMO, B.C. — The spring planting season is firmly underway on Vancouver Island.

The downtown Nanaimo branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library is looking to give local gardeners a leg up this year with a seed library featuring vegetables, herbs and wildflowers.

Dalia Levy, VIRL’s seed library founder, said registration in a previous program run by the library, a master gardener series, showed more people are getting into growing their own food.

“With our new seed library, we’re opening the door for more families and individuals to take part in this healthy, locally-focused activity. Since we’re all being asked to stay close to home for the time being, I don’t know if there’s been a better time to get into gardening.”

Seed packets are available to pickup from the second floor of the VIRL’s harbourfront branch to anyone with a library card.

Selections include tomatoes, zucchini, basil, rosemary, peppers and a variety of wild flowers.

The library is placing a three packet per person limit on pickups to ensure everyone gets a go.

West Coast Seeds is credited with supporting the library, providing nearly 1,000 seed packets to the library.

Those interested in donating seeds to the library can do so during regular business hours.
