Humboldt Golf Course to host women and junior golf clinics this season

Apr 29, 2021 | 11:15 AM

The first of many golf clinics for women and juniors will take place in May at the Humboldt Golf Club.

Anna Young and Carolyn Janidlo-Maclean are the coaches for the clinics that are into their second season.

Prior to being in Humboldt, Young had been in Orlando for the past 10 years playing golf. Janidlo-Maclean is a former Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) teaching professional.

The two women are part of the small field of professional women golfers in Saskatchewan.

“It’s not very common in general for women to be teaching clinics so I think it is really awesome that there are two women who are heading the golf instruction at Humboldt,” Young said. “It is just really rare and so it is super cool.”

Along with instructing in Humboldt, Young is also teaching in Saskatoon.

The duo of Young and Janidlo-Maclean plan to host one clinic a month for women this season and one per month for juniors after seeing a large interest in Humboldt and surrounding area. The junior clinics are for ages eight to 18 with the first one being hosted on May 10 from 4 to 6 p.m.

A big focus for Young as an instructor is to grow the interest in golf for women and juniors.

“It is such a fun game which is the motivation for all of the clinics,” Young said.

The upcoming women’s clinics will include a few different aspects of the game such as swing and short game. Young said she also really likes to focus on getting women to be more comfortable with being at a golf course.

“Men are typically more comfortable at the golf course because there is always going to be men around, whereas sometimes women are uncomfortable because they might be the only woman there, they aren’t as good or as experienced,” Young said.

It can be as simple as having a conversation to make women a bit more at ease about being at a course for the first time or for the first couple of times.

“Telling them that they deserve to be there and it’s okay to not be really good because they are starting out,” Young said. “Sometimes people just need to hear that out loud.”

Young said it is also important for people to realize that golf is a difficult game to exceed at.

“You really have to plan to go and have fun, you should not plan to be good,” Young said. “If you become really good, it is awesome but it shouldn’t be the focus.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, there were five spots left in the May 19 women’s clinic that runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Rental clubs are available at the golf course for those who don’t have their own.

The junior clinic on May 10 filled up within 24 hours so a second was added which was also fully booked within 24 hours. A wait list has been created for the next junior clinic that will take place in June.

“This is the year to learn. We can’t do much else and it gets you outside and off your screens,” Young said. “This is a family activity that you can do for the rest of your life so I really recommend some lessons to anyone and especially to families.”

All of the public health guidelines will be followed which Young said is easy with being outside and having ample space to be socially distant. Everyone will have their own space on the range and their own bucket of golf balls.

Contact Young at 306-380-6105 or Janidlo-Maclean at 306-231-2071 to get registered for a clinic or for more information. The cost is $50 a person if registered before May 5, or $60 after May 5.
