Melfort Communities in Bloom planning several special projects this season

The Melfort Communities in Bloom (CiB) committee is getting ready for another busy season.

Peggy George with CiB gave some insight into the projects the group has underway for this year as they continue their work to beautify the city.

“We had a vintage truck delivered to Saskatchewan Drive this week that is going to tell a very fun story throughout the summer,” George said.

The group also has “something very special” as George referred to it, that will help with welcoming people to the city from Highway 6 north.

“People will have to be on the watch for that, I don’t want to give too much away just yet,” George said.

“Hopefully within the next month, things will start being very visible as to what we are doing,” George said.

CiB also approached Melfort City Council about getting a street re-named to honour veterans.

“It has gone to council, it has gone to community services, I haven’t heard officially from the city yet but I think it is going to happen,” George said. “I hope to be able to announce that in the next couple of weeks.”

On top of the new projects, members and volunteers with CiB will plant 159 planters at least and will be looking after flower beds in parks and throughout the city.

Melfort CiB will participate in the National CiB program which will be virtual again this year since national judges will be unable to visit in-person.

Fundraising has been put on hold for the group due to the restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic but they are always accepting monetary donations as well as donations of time.

“If you like what we do and you want to come out and help, we will find a place for you,” George said.

The Community Garden was a welcome addition to the city a couple of seasons ago. George said there are just four garden plots left that are available for rent.

The week of May 2 will be designated as Communities in Bloom week by the City of Melfort. The CiB flag will be raised at City Hall on Monday, May 3.

The very successful City of Melfort program is entering its 18th season.
