City of Melfort purchases parcels of land in northern part of city for development

The City of Melfort has purchased some parcels of land in the northern part of town.

At a Special Council Meeting on Friday, April 30, council approved the purchase of a number of parcels. They include lots on 225 Babbington Ave East, 226 Babbington Ave East, 223 Ranson Ave East, 1620 Main Street North, and 1690 Main Street North.

Mayor Glenn George told northeastNOW that those parcels had been privately owned for a long time, as far back as when those parcels were part of the Rural Municipality decades ago.

“There were some people that owned land in that part of town that have never done anything with it,” George said. “And we want to start developing it.”

The total cost of the purchase was $40,000. George said there was talk of expropriation if it was needed, but ultimately all parties involved came to an agreement on a price for each parcel.

As for what is set to be done to those properties, it’s still very early, but George said the Babbington properties will likely be the first to see some action.

“We’re just going to extend that one block,” he said. “And we’re going to put residential lots in there and they’re going to be for sale.”

The remaining properties will get developed as the years progress according to George.
