MN-S Election

Digness focusing on urban indigenous programming in bid for MN-S Regional Representative

May 6, 2021 | 8:00 AM

A Porcupine Plain man is hoping to remove ‘interim’ from his title.

Brent Digness is one of three candidates in the running to be the regional representative for Eastern Region II with the Metis Nation Saskatchewan (MN-S).

Digness has been the interim representative since September and said he wants to continue his work in the region.

“I really found it inspiring to see the growth that has taken place so far in the region,” Digness told northeastNOW. “As I’ve been rebuilding it.”

He also worked for Eastern Region II growing up and said through the years he’s learned a lot about the programming that the MN-S offers, and that this region is built from the grassroots people up all the way to the head office. Digness added that he’s learned a lot about those he is representing and those at the main office he would be working with.

Something that Digness said he wants to make priorities are urban indigenous programming. He said things like land based learning, and heritage and culture learning are very important at the grassroots level, and things that they can get funding for.

Tourism and sport is another piece of indigenous programming that is important to Digness, and he’s learned a lot that has come with the pandemic.

“A lot of it has to be done virtually,” he said. “But in our own homes, still we can practice a healthy way of living.”

Digness added he also helped recently put together ‘Good Health Boxes’ for those in the region as the pandemic went on that included good healthy food sources. He said he’s also helped a number of families with conversations about business in the area.

He said transparency is also of major importance to him.

“I feel that my proven record over the last eight months has allowed me to show that transparency to the citizens,” Digness said. “And to the presidents that I represent.”

With the election just under a month away, Digness said he will be putting up banners in the region, as well has using some billboard space.

Metis citizens can vote in their region at the Regional Returning Offices starting May 14 through 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or at advance polls in select communities on May 22 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m, before going to the polls on election day on May 29.

Brittany St. Dennis, and Dennis Miller are the other candidates in Eastern Region II.
