Location chosen for new Lanigan school

Horizon School Division has chosen the location for the new school in Lanigan.

The building will be built between Lanigan Elementary and Lanigan Central High School and will replace both schools.

“We already have a lot of the necessary infrastructure built there,” Horizon School Division Director of Education Kevin Garinger said. “We have the track and the football field and all those types of things at that location. To move it would be extremely challenging.”

The school is expected to be open in 2023 for approximately 400 students from kindergarten to Grade 12, and the plan is for work on the facility to begin in March or April of 2022.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” Garinger added. “We’re looking forward to putting shovels in the ground in about a year. We will hopefully be at a place where we would be expected to have all the architecture and everything else ready to go so that we could begin the initial construction phase.”

The old schools will be operational until the new two-level facility is finished.

“This is a partnership,” Garinger said. “This is for the community. The town of Lanigan has been incredible and they are just so supportive of this project. It just speaks to the partnership that we have within our communities and how important our communities are in these projects. We’ve been engaged with the Ministry of Education. We’re very happy to have them supporting us as well.”
