Humboldt Campground ready to open before May long once again

May 16, 2021 | 10:00 AM

The Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce is getting ready to open the gates to the Humboldt Historic Campground.

The campground is set to open on May 21, back to the tradition of opening on the Friday before the May long weekend.

“Last year we weren’t even allowed to open until July 1,” said Chamber executive director Brent Fitzpatrick. “So this year is much better.”

Fitzpatrick added that the late opening last year hurt the financial aspect a bit, but they’re excited to get back to a normal opening.

As they prepare for the opening, Fitzpatrick said they’ve cut down a couple dozen trees in the park, and they’re preparing to welcome their summer students who will help with some painting and the final cleanup before things get rolling for the season.

Anyone interested in camping can book their spots at the campground now. Fitzpatrick said, so far, reservations are a bit lower than normal right now.

“We’re really hoping that as we all do our part and knock this COVID-19 thing into the past, that will change,” he said. “And people will start looking at making some trips across their province or across the country.”

The washrooms will remain closed this year at the campground, so those coming to the park are asked to have a self contained washroom facility. The dump station however, is free to use.

Mini-golf will also be open to the public and Fitzpatrick said they will continue with their heavy cleaning protocols to make sure there’s no worry for those participating.
