Melfort, Tisdale Curling Clubs to host Junior Provincials in October

May 30, 2021 | 10:00 AM

Junior curlers from across Saskatchewan will converge on Melfort and Tisdale come fall 2021.

The two municipalities are hosting the Provincial Junior Curling Championships this year.

“We need those provincials to keep the club open,” said Melfort General Manager Gerald McGillivray.

The Under-20 men will play in Melfort while the women will play in Tisdale between October 27 and 31. McGillivray said having events like these in these centres is great for the whole community.

“Especially with the juniors, parents and grandparents come,” he said. “So, it uses up a lot of hotel rooms.”

McGillivray said he has booked 80 rooms as it stands. Hotel rooms are just one piece as well as restaurants are expected to be busy all weekend.

The Melfort Curling Club has tried to have some sort of provincial championship every year. In 2019, they held the Provincial Club Championships, and in 2018, the Viterra Scotties Provincials were in Melfort. They were also set to host the Masters Provincials in 2020, but those were shut down due to COVID-19.

Tisdale recently hosted the Senior Provincials at the RecPlex and were set to host a total of five Provincial events in February of 2021 before the pandemic paused things again.

McGillivray said plans for volunteers and sponsors will be getting underway in the near future for Melfort’s side of things.

The Tisdale Curling Club did not return calls for comment.
