Men’s fastball league gets back into the swing of things

The Richardson Pioneer Men’s Fastball League (RPMFL) is getting back into the swing of things after the province included outdoor sports in Step One of Saskatchewan’s Re-open Roadmap, which began on Sunday.

The Fishing Lake Cubs, Foam Lake Merchants, Rosebud Jr. Royals, Balcarres Bronx, Neudorf Posse, Wynyard Blues, Rosebud Royals and Rhein Rockets are taking part in the RPMFL this year.

The Rosebud Jr. Royals and Rosebud Royals kicked off the season Sunday with a doubleheader.

The first game ended with a 1-1 tie and the Jr. Royals won the second game 4-3.

Richardson Pioneer Men’s Fastball League president Michael Jordan said he originally thought they were going to have a shorter season.

“We assumed we wouldn’t be able to start until after June 20 with the original Step Two of the plan,” Jordan said. “We put stuff together pretty quickly and are excited to get back to playing. We were kind of playing catch up. We were a little bit caught off guard.”

The league is planning to play a 14-game schedule this season.

“We’re excited that it’s a little more normal with a little more games that can be played,” Jordan said. “It’s just going to hopefully be better.”

Jordan said COVID-19 restrictions are being followed by the RPMFL.

“The current restrictions are a lot less thorough than last year,” Jordan said.

The RPMFL rescheduled their season four times in 2020 but ended up starting on July 6, and the Rhein Rockets were crowned league champions.
