LANDFILL EXPANSION

Tisdale Regional Landfill project almost finished

Jun 3, 2021 | 5:21 PM

The Tisdale Regional Landfill expansion project is expected to be finished by October.

The project includes a new landfill cell, leachate pond and compost area.

“We originally had anticipated that the project would be completed by the end of last summer,” Brad Hvidston, Town of Tisdale Chief Administrative Officer, said. “There were some delays in the engineering. There were some delays that were caused be COVID-19 and by everybody working from home and different things.”

Chupa Trucking & Excavating Ltd. will be building the new cell.

“We awarded the tender to Chupa Trucking & Excavating at the council meeting on May 25 and anticipate that we will be starting right away,” Hvidston said. “Hopefully we will be done by the end of the construction season. Hopefully that goes smoothly.”

The landfill is expected to be accessible while the work is being completed.

“The ability to weigh loads will be interrupted for a period of time, but there shouldn’t be any times that you won’t be able to access the landfill,” Hvidston added.

A federal investment of $2.13 million and $1.78 million in provincial government funding went towards the project in 2019 under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

“The costs are coming in close to what we had budgeted,” Hvidston said.

The Town of Tisdale is contributing nearly $1.4 million to the project, which is expected to cost approximately $5.3 million.

“This project will extend the life of the landfill for over 20 years,” Hvidston said.
