Enhancements coming to new Carrot River school

Enhancements will be added to the new Kindergarten to Grade 12 school in Carrot River as the committee is raising funds.

The school committee is raising money for enhancements including a weight room, multi-sport court, play spaces, track upgrades and soccer pitches.

“The RM of Moose Range and the Town of Carrot River suggested that we form a group to do some fundraising,” Kevin Trew, North East School Division trustee representing Subdivision 2 said. “We have some local people on the committee that have had interest in the school. I don’t want to name names because then I’m going to miss somebody. We had some conversations with our local staff at the schools that are currently in Carrot River about the enhancements that would be important to the local community.”

The school division will be submitting enhancement plans to the architect by June 30 and the goal is to raise $2 million by then.

“$2 million should cover all those enhancements,” Trew said. “The inside enhancements need to be finalized very soon. There are some outside enhancements that we can still get commitments for up until the building is built.”

North East School Division staff and project managers will recommend what enhancements should be the priority if less than $2 million is raised.

The board of the school division will make final decisions regarding the enhancements.

“The enhancements are something that is a local responsibility,” Trew said. “The government is providing funding for a great school in Carrot River. The province approved the build for the new school for $20.4 million.”

The Novak Family Foundation, which is connected to Edgewood Forest Products in Carrot River, has already committed to donating $1 million for the cause.

“They don’t want a bunch of recognition,” Trew said. “We’re halfway there with the $1 million commitment.”

Donations can be made at the Carrot River town office or RM of Moose Range office.

The new school will be built around the Carrot River Jr. Sr. High School gym.

Construction is expected to be finished in 2023.
