City of Humboldt welcomes new Bylaw Enforcement Officer

There’s a new sheriff in town.

Justin Tarrant is the City of Humboldt’s new Bylaw Enforcement Officer. He started the position on May 31, but has been living in Humboldt for about nine years.

“When this bylaw position came available, I jumped on it right away,” Tarrant told northeastNOW. “I’m just eager to help keep Humboldt a safe, clean place for all its residents.”

Originally from Moose Jaw, Tarrant said he had dreams of becoming a police officer and as a result took four years of pre-police studies and moved to Humboldt with his wife, who is a teacher. Prior to taking the job as Bylaw Enforcement Officer, Tarrant was working at Midland Glass in the city.

Tarrant has two young children and said he wants to make sure they feel safe walking down the street in Humboldt.

“I’m just but I’m fair,” he said. “If you do have any concerns, by all means, feel free to call me or contact me. I’m just a person like everybody else, so I do make mistakes as well.”

Tarrant takes over the position from Norm Mattock who had held the Bylaw Enforcement Officer role for about 10 years, and was with the City of Humboldt for almost 18 years. Tarrant said while he started the job after Mattock had retired, he still got to learn from his predecessor after giving him a call and having a meeting.

“It was good kind of having a day where I could pick his brain about kind of the ins and the outs,” Tarrant said. “And some of the more popular bylaws that he kind of dealt with on a day-to-day basis.”
