Shaun Gardiner, Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) vice-principal, has received the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) Service Award for the Horizon Central Athletic Association.

The award is given out to celebrate leadership and promotion for high school athletics.

“It’s a real honour,” Gardiner said. “I was quite surprised to be honest. I’m very touched. I’ve been really lucky to have support around me. It’s about as good as it gets. I think there’s just so many good candidates every year who probably do more than me.”

Gardiner has spent more than 20 years working at HCI and has coached several sports.

“When you coach as much as we do, you hope you are recognized,” Gardiner said.

He served as head coach of the football team for 13 seasons and won provincial championships in 2008 and 2010. Gardiner was also the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Gardiner has also coached track and field, badminton and basketball and has been involved in community sports programs.

“I’ve tried to be a multi-sport coach and I’ve enjoyed the challenges of sports and experiences with students,” Gardiner said. “It’s been a real privilege to serve the students, the community of Humboldt and the parents.”
