Storm in Northern Sask. causes canoes to capsize, Saskatoon man dies

A canoe trip in Northern Saskatchewan has come to a tragic end.

One man lost his life while five others were taken hospital after their canoes capsized in Amisk Lake.

According to Creighton RCMP, a report came in just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, of three canoes that had capsized on the south side of the lake and six men were in the water.

A large storm had moved through the area at around 4:30 p.m. Large waves caused the three canoes to capsize.

The men floated until they reached cell range and were able to call police with a cellphone that was in a waterproof container.

When the group was located by police, a 48-year-old man from Saskatoon was unconscious and was pronounced dead at Flin Flon hospital.

The other five men were transported to hospital in Flin Flon for assessment.
