Kinistino Legion building moves to new destination, making room for new community centre

The Kinistino Legion building has officially been moved off of its site in the town.

A portion of the building was loaded onto a truck and taken to its next destination, the St. Denis area for another use. The old entrance was demolished.

Kinistino Legion Poppy Chairman Terry Ford said it was bittersweet to see the legion be taken away.

“It’s sort of sad, but it’s not,” Ford said. “Because there’s something bigger and better coming.”

The kitchen portion of the building was moved a few weeks ago.

The new community centre is set to be on that same site and will house the town office, a new legion room, a stage, some rental hall space, daycare facilities, and potentially even a medical clinic. Ford said the new building will be a great addition and be much more modern than the old legion building. Ford said the new building will even have air conditioning.

“All on one floor, no stairs,” he said. “There are a lot of things that go into making a building more useful.”

Ford added that the old legion building was becoming much too difficult to maintain and wasn’t bringing in as many events as it did in the past.

While the building is going to be replaced with a modern facility and new legion room, there is still some nostalgia that sits with community members when thinking about the legion building. Ford said construction began in 1947 and the first meeting was held there in 1949. He said while cleaning out the building, he found a number of old documents that provided some history for the building including some old plans, receipts, and more.

Ford said that the building hosted a number of events throughout its time, including a number of dances, something he said was well-received by community members.

“Probably the best dance floor in the whole area,” Ford said. “Plus they had the acoustic tile, so they figured the sound was pretty decent in it.”

He added that some of the people who helped build the legion are still around the community and those who built it were extremely proud legion people because of their contributions in the two world wars.
