Show and sale by 12th City Artist Collective being held on Canada Day

The 12^th City Artist Collective is having a show and sale on Canada Day.

The group of six artists will set up their creations at Spruce Haven Park throughout the afternoon according to member Joanne Bolen.

“We assign each homework such as make a painting and put some text in there, we bring it back the next time we meet and everyone shows off their homework,” Bolen said.

The show is happening in conjunction with art in the city that runs from noon to 6 p.m. at various locations in Melfort.

“Our show will have our own body of work showing on panels in the covered shelter at Spruce Have,” Bolen said. “We will have separate panel away from that and it will be our homework panel.”

There will be some pieces for sale depending on each individual artist.

The collective was started a couple of years ago but was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A restructuring took place, and it was decided to have a very close-knit dedicated group of artists.

The group started again last fall with their six members and since have churned out some very beautiful pieces, Bolen said.

The collective will be extending invitations for two new members very soon.

“If an artist is interested in joining a collective that is very dedicated to the practice of their art, they are welcome to fill out an application form,” Bolen said.

The results of the application will be determined by the middle of August.

“We are excited for the next year to come and as a group, we are planning trips into Saskatoon to visit the Remai Art Gallery and other art studios,” Bolen said. “We usually order supplies as a group to cut shipping costs, and we just have worked together so well.”

Member Olivia Maney said being part of the group has helped her to grow as an artist.

“Having each member on a rotation of homework assignments forces me to be creative in my process, and go outside of my own practice and think and work in challenging ways,” Maney said.

She has had a couple of favorite project assignments throughout the year.

“The one I handed out almost broke me as an artist, and it became a struggle and then a coming through that I hadn’t expected,” Maney said. “I came through stronger as an artist, but during it, I found myself in a troubled place and reached a point of almost quitting altogether.”

An assignment from Bolen on surrealism has been her most favourite and another close one was a diptych challenge assigned by artist Leah Henderson.

“They were instrumental in pulling me in different thinking and directions artistically that seemed like breaking out of a rut,” Maney said. “Each artist in the collective brings their own talents and benefits but having the support and interaction with other artists you respect has been such encouragement.”

Artists in the collective along with Bolen, Maney, and Henderson are Anchen Bodensta, Nadine Hoffman, and Christina Miller.
