Final season for TV franchise that put Saskatchewan on the map

Corner Gas Animated is coming to an end, with its upcoming fourth season being its last.

The 17-year run for the Corner Gas franchise has been a huge success story for Canadian and Saskatchewan television.

The show’s creator, star and executive director, Brent Butt, told Gormley if it were up to him, the series wouldn’t end just yet.

“It wasn’t my decision. I would have been happy to do a couple more seasons for sure. It was the network’s call; it’s their prerogative,” Butt explained. “It’s a very difficult time in broadcast TV right now. At a certain point, I think we’re kind of the victims of our own success, because it’s a costly show to make.”

With 107 live-action episodes, a movie and now almost 50 animated episodes, Butt says at a certain point, it becomes diminishing return.

“I’m cool to do other things now,” he said. “But at the same time, Corner Gas has shown itself to be one of those things. (It’s) kind of like a zombie show — it just won’t die.”

Even if the show is ending, the bond between cast members lives on.

“We really went through something very special together and I think we will always be kind of welded together in that regard,” Butt said. “Even though we’re spread out across the country, we’re still connected and I think we always will be.”
