Nelson has spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with Canisius College, and prior to that spent two seasons with the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League. His first coaching gig was at his alma mater of Ferris State University where he coached one season.

The Regina product played U18 AAA hockey with the Tisdale Trojans in 2005/2006 and also played a game for the Humboldt Broncos as a call-up. Nelson would spend the next two seasons with Humboldt and did not disappoint. Over his two campaigns with the club, he held a 51-9 record, a career goals-against-average of 2.15 and a save percentage of about .918. He was named the SJHL’s Top Goaltender in 2007/2008, and was also on the second All-Star Team. The Humboldt Broncos were also SJHL Champions both years Nelson was with the club.

Nelson then went on to play four years at Ferris State University, and was named a First Team All-American for NCAA West.
