Campgrounds at Narrow Hills Provincial Park evacuated and closed due to Harding Fire

Jul 16, 2021 | 5:00 PM

A number of camping sites in Narrow Hills Provincial Park have been evacuated and closed as a result of the Harding fire that is burning just north of Smeaton.

According to Becky Hoehn, the acting Executive Director of Park Operations with the Ministry of Parks, Culture, and Sport, there have been a number of closures. Lower Fishing Lake, Zeden Lake, Ispuchaw Lake, Rangers Beach Group Camping, Lakeview Group Camping, group tenting one and two, and Lower Fishing Lake overflow sites have all been evacuated and closed.

“We’ll reassess this on Monday to ascertain whether the closures need to be continued,” Hoehn said. “Or whether we can continue with re-opening the campground and proceeding.”

Hoehn said they wouldn’t normally close a campsite for wildfire smoke, but she did not say more on what was the main reasoning for those sites to be at risk. Hoehn said they are working very closely with and taking recommendations from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency.

“We take all the factors into consideration, as well as access into these sites, and make sure that we are making the best decision to ensure that we don’t have visitors in a situation that would be dangerous to them,” she said.

Hoehn said they have made contact by emails and voicemails with visitors at the sites and those with reservations for the weekend to tell them about the closures.
