A $5,000 hole-in-one for Humboldt’s Murray Lees

Murray Lees of Humboldt is celebrating his third career hole-in-one, and the most lucrative.

The stroke earned Lees $5,000 at the Auto Clearing Senior Men’s Championship at the Moon Lake Golf and Country Club in June.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t have my glasses on, so the sad part was not seeing just hearing my partners yell and scream so that was good,” Lees said.

Lees was just on hole four when he won the prize, so he really needed to focus and stay on track for the remainder of the tournament.

“The guys were yelling and screaming and I’m going, so what. I guess after the round I started thinking about it and thought, it’s pretty cool to win money on a stroke,” Lees said.

Lees was born and raised in Melfort but moved to Humboldt to become a business owner. He has also been a pastor for 25 years with faith being very important for himself and his wife, Glenda.

The two are planning to donate the winnings to help kids go to camp.

“Our hearts are very much in camp ministry, there are camps at Stoney Lake and Torch Trail Bible Camp,” Lees said. “We don’t need the money and we’re just going to be helping out kids.”

Another idea that Lees mentioned is having a golf tournament in Melfort for a fundraiser for at risk kids that wouldn’t typically have an opportunity to go camp.

The winnings for Lees comes after being told by his doctor that golf might not be an option after undergoing stem cell transplants to battle cancer over three years ago.
