Great weekend for Baseball

U13 Red Sox win provincial title at home

The U13 Muenster Red Sox are once again holding the provincial baseball title, this time with a tournament win at home with the community hosting the event.

This is the third consecutive title for this group, head coach Derek Rude told northeastNOW, with two U11 titles also under their belt before this recent U13 win.

Eight Saskatchewan teams travelled to Muenster to face off for the title with Weyburn, Unity, Watrous and Humboldt battling it out in round robin action and Tisdale, Melville, Prince Albert and Muenster facing off on the other side of the round robin.

When the shale settled it would be the Weyburn Beavers and Unity Cardinals advancing from pool A and Muenster and the Prince Albert Royals advancing from pool B.

An 8-3 win over Weyburn would advance the Royals to the final match up with Muenster as they would take the win from Unity 12-2.

While all his players did amazing work over the weekend, Rude said, Dexter Rohel threw really well on the mound to get the team through to the final where pitchers Dayne Schommer and Wil Daubenfeld kept the heavy hitting Royals at bay in the Red Sox’s 4-0 shutout win.

Parents and volunteers kept the weekend running smoothly and Rude said the community received plenty of compliments from the visiting teams and their fans.

With multiple teams wrapping up the season this weekend, including many Muenster softball and baseball teams travel across the province to compete, Rude said there wasn’t as many hometown fans as they are used to seeing. But with plenty of the teams coming from short distances, fans from across the region were able to join in the fun.

It was a great weekend all around, said Rude, and much of the credit goes to the teams, volunteers, and officials for making the weekend a success.
