Barney ready to see Broncos back in EPA

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League will be back in action on Sept. 24, including the Humboldt Broncos making their return to the Elgar Petersen Arena (EPA).

Scott Barney, head coach of the Humboldt Broncos, said players will once again be preparing physically and mentally for the new season.

Of course last years abbreviated season was a disappointment, especially for the 13 or so Broncos who aged out of the league, but now they get to rebuild.

“It’s gonna be interesting to see where some guys are at when really some guys have played five games in the last kind of 24 months,” Barney told northeastNOW.

They already have a strong defensive core, while losing some of their top scorers. Barney is happy about the impending return of Rayce Ramsay from the Kamloops Blazers in the Western Hockey League, as well as Logan Kurki while there are plenty of good, young players coming into the league. This includes LeRoy original, Connor McGrath.

“It’ll be good to get another local kid in here and hopefully the fans enjoy that.”

While COVID restrictions kept the team out of the EPA, it also kept the players from getting out into the community, whether that was walking dogs at the SPCA or getting into the schools to spend time with the students.

Barney said Humboldt has many ways for the players to get involved in the community and is always up for suggestions.

“We want our players to be involved in that and if someone has something they’d like us involved, please give us a call and we’d love to help out.”

The Humboldt Bronco’s play their first game of the season on Sept. 24 against the Notre Dame Hounds.
