Krista’s Kilometres for MMIW

Every morning Krista Fox begins her day with prayer and journaling. She’s kicked a smoking habit, is drinking more water and committed to walking a minimum of 10,000 steps per day.

But she’s not doing it just to better herself. She’s doing it for those who can’t.

The 53-year-old North Battleford woman is planning to walk across Canada next year to raise awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. (MMIW)

“This mission in my life has been inspired by Ashley Morin, who went missing in July of 2018. I am walking for her, knowing she will be by my side very single step of the way. However, I also now know that I am walking for all Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman, and every single family member that is going through the pain, loss and suffering,” Fox said.

First and foremost, Fox wants people to know that all missing and murdered have a face; they are more than just a statistic. Her ultimate goal is to end what she calls a national crisis. She hopes her walk across the country raises and creates enough awareness that families can finally have access to the resources they need to not only search but also to find their loves ones or bring peace to the families in grief.

According to Fox, there have been more than 580 missing and/or murdered Indigenous women in the last 10 years and 67 per cent of those are homicide cases; more than half of those are never solved. Aboriginal women and girls represent approximately 10 per cent of all female homicides in Canada, yet Aboriginal women make up only 3 per cent of the female population.

“I want all Canadians in this country to see and recognize our loved ones. I want them to know we will fight for each other, to know I will keep up the fight to find and access better resources for our families. I want better relationships built between our families and local, provincial and federal police officers.”

Fox plans to take a leave of absence from her employer, and embark on her journey from Victoria, B.C. in February of 2022. She hopes to complete the walk ten months later in Newfoundland.

“I want every human, politician, change maker and most importantly family to know that I am out there fighting for our loved ones. I will never ever give up, and I will not be silent.”
