Melfort Toastmasters looking for more members to become chartered club

Sep 3, 2021 | 1:00 PM

The Toastmasters group in Melfort is hoping to grow their numbers this fall in order to become chartered.

The international educational organization aims to build communication and leadership skills. Members of the group were set-up at Melfort’s Community Connections and city-wide registration on Wednesday.

Margaret Andris told northeastNOW she became a member this year and has enjoyed her time so far.

“We have a lot of fun, but we learn a lot too and we learn how to do speeches and it helps you in your work,” Andris said.

The group currently has 18 members and needs 20 members to charter. Chartered groups in Toastmasters access all educational resources that they have to offer, including all 11 pathways for people to develop their skills in public speaking, and more.

“We can get access to the fine details of pathways, we can get the logistics right now but we can’t get the finer details until we charter,” Andris said.

The group meets once a week on Thursdays. Each meeting has a toastmaster who begins the meeting, the sergeant of arms reads their mission, followed by speakers, evaluations and table topics.

Andris said the time commitment is all about what members want to get out of it.

“If you can’t make it, you can’t make it,” Andris said. “You aren’t committed to it and you don’t have to go onto the executive clubs but if you want they do come open every year.”

Networking is another helpful part of being involved with the group.

“It really just helps you to communicate better with people,” Andris said.

Those interested in joining can find Melfort Toastmasters online and on Facebook.
