Tree Canada, Home Hardware host third annual tree plant for City of Melfort

This year, 32 Home Hardware and Home Building Centre locations will participate in tree planting initiatives across the country. Since 1992, Home Hardware Dealers have planted 28,190 trees, valued at over $1.6 million, in green spaces from coast to coast.

National Tree Day falls on the Wednesday of National Forest Week. This day is celebrated across the country with tree dedications, plantings, educational workshops, outdoor education walks, interpretive days, schoolyard plantings, and seminars.

“Tree Canada, Canada’s only national non-profit organization dedicated to planting and nurturing trees in rural and urban environments, is excited to continue our partnership with Home Hardware by bringing more trees to communities across Canada,” said Danielle St-Aubin, CEO, Tree Canada.”

“Since 1992, Tree Canada and Home Hardware have worked together to plant and maintain close to 30,000 trees, creating a lasting legacy for present and future generations.”

This year, over 100 hundred trees were planted in Melfort, both at the Historic Post Office and Spruce Haven Recreational Park.

Kelvin Kelley, Community Advisor with Tree Canada, is excited about this project specifically because of how nice these places already are and how much these trees will add to the areas.

“All the infrastructure is here, the roadways, the soccer pitches, the waterpark, so now we’re landscaping it. We’re providing greening for the community and with the provision of trees, that adds a lot of benefits to the community. It really enhances and improves the facility.”

Jeff Klan, Manager at George Home Hardware, said this year both organizations were especially excited to once again host the event this year after last year’s cancellation due to the pandemic.

“Tree Canada was excited to get going this year again, after the hold up last year because of COVID, so once the application was up, we just went for it.”

Klan also mentioned that because of the history the two organizations have and how well the past has gone, that there was absolutely no reason not to partner up once again.

“Because of our success in the past, Tree Canada was pretty happy to help us out this year and keep things going.”

He also agreed with Kelley on the fact of how well the area would benefit from these trees, because of how much other work has already been done.

“In a new area like this, that’s growing, having trees is very important and having it look natural, look like a green area, always helps the park look beautiful,” said Klan.

Klan also spoke to the importance of the City of Melfort, which has helped partner with this foundation every year in growing the beauty of the city.

“Every year the City of Melfort has matched Tree Canada’s grant, so that’s helped a lot and let us do a lot in years that may not have otherwise happened.”

Both groups also appreciated the help from the community and their volunteers, especially the Mustangs, who sent out a few of their players to assist.

“We got the Mustangs to help today, which was awesome,” said Klan. “It’s great to have some young guys that can do some heavier work.”
