Opening Weekend

Despite slow start to the season, Trojans happy about team’s performance

Sep 28, 2021 | 12:17 PM

The Tisdale Trojans fell 3-1 to Swift Current on opening night at the Tisdale RECplex, they were then defeated 3-2 the next evening by the Regina Pat Canadians.

The team returns only two players from last season’s squad that went 2-1 before the campaign came to an end due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Head coach of the Trojans, Dennis Kubat, said despite losing both games this past weekend, there were definitely some positives to build on.

“It was our first step,” Kubat said. “Obviously you go into every game wanting to get the win, but after both games, I was happy because we did a lot of good things. I thought their performance was good and I know that we have a special group here and that the sky is the limit.”

Kubat also mentioned that coming into a season, off a season that was unlike any other, especially for a group of guys that are so young, there were some nerves to be expected.

“The boys you could tell were pretty nervous to start the game,” Kubat said. “A lot of them probably haven’t played in front of that big of a crowd, plus the excitement of the first game. It was nice to get back in that atmosphere.”

That atmosphere will definitely play a big part in the team’s development as Kubat spoke on the importance of experience and how that will help his team.

“It was big just getting that taste,” Kubat said. “Getting that experience definitely helped them. We’re just trying to continue to build that culture. One of our mottos is to ‘love the grind.'”

With such a young group, Kubat knows how important that culture is and the potential that this team really has and the responsibility that puts on the staff.

“We got a lot of fresh faces and they’re just very eager. We have a chance to really develop what we want here in Tisdale. A lot of our guys have a really high ceiling,” he said.

“Our expectations are always to make playoffs because when you make it, anything can happen and that’s been proven in the past. We want these guys to succeed because at the end of the day, we’re a development league and we want to make the best humans both on and off the ice.”

The Trojans are in Estevan this coming weekend for two games against the Bears. Saturday will be the first regular-season contest between the two teams.

The Bears joined the league for the 2020-2021 season but did not take on the Trojans before the campaign was cancelled due to the pandemic. After playing in Estevan, the Trojans’ road swing continues for two more weekends. Their next home game is Oct. 23 when they host the Bears.
