Hammond looks to stay hot as Mustangs head into second week of SJHL season

The Melfort Mustangs are 1-1-0-0 to start the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season, and one player at the centre of it all was newly acquired Curtis Hammond.

Hammond came to Melfort prior to training camp in a trade with the Coquitlam Express and has started the season with three goals in his first two games in blue and green, good for an early tie at the top of the SJHL goal scoring leaders. The Fort St. John B.C. product scored the first goal of the season on Friday in Melfort, followed by two goals on Saturday in Flin Flon to start a comeback that fell just short for the Mustangs. Hammond said his hot start is a credit to the effort the team has put in at practice, and their compete level in the games.

“We all knew they were important games heading into the home opener,” he said. “So we just wanted to be hard and play with compete and effort.”

While the team didn’t play their best in their 5-3 loss to Flin Flon on Saturday, Hammond said they know the task at hand heading into the week.

“We wanted to put that game behind us, obviously as soon as it ended,” Hammond said.

Melfort looks to right the ship on Tuesday, Sept. 28 as they visit the 0-2-0-0 Yorkton Terriers. Mat Barrett will have the play-by-play of that game with the pre-game show on 105CJVR at 7:15 p.m.. That will be followed by a weekend home-and-home with their rival Nipawin Hawks.
